Find Where The Wind Goes.
A million months ago, I asked myself, if I were ever able to designate a group of people to be "in my corner"//(see also "be down for", ride for), what would they be called? This was a toughie. There are countless individuals who have shaped how I feel about my world. They look all different and some do crazy things, but that's what I like about it. It's Black Histry Month again, for the 21st time for me. Honestly, it's felt like Black History Month in theory since November 6th, 2008- but that's not my point, just an ill observation. Fun fact: I'm big on holidays. So I'd like to use the posts here this month to honor women who I feel have been amazing in this crazy world. The group, I'd like to call: the Analogue Avengers, daring, intelligent and iconic in their own rights. I want to begin with an oldie, but goodie. Growing up, I'd see this woman on countless Black History posters, but her significance means so much more to me now as a sorta-grown-up. The title of this post comes from an article she has written. Dr. Mae Jemison was the first Black woman astronaut ever in history aboard the space shuttle Endeavour , September 12th, 1992. She said she always grew up knowing she'd be a scientist, and always knew she'd go into space. And she did. "In kindergarten, my teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I told her a scientist," Jemison says. "She said, 'Don't you mean a nurse?' Now, there's nothing wrong with being a nurse, but that's not what I wanted to be. Aside from entering Stanford University at 16, Mae was also an accomplished dancer. She took a poster of the Ailven Ailey American Dance Company with her onto the Endeavour. (ill!) In this new age, where we're constantly drawing inspiration from the cosmos, Mae isn't to be forgotten. She had vision, determination, and desire to care about her world and beyond. Dr. Jemison, a true Analogue Avenger. Labels: Analogue Avengers, Black History Month, Mae Jemison
