Monday, June 15, 2009 Old Japan | kamakura • yokohama

World,

I lived in Tokyo nearly half a year, and before I left I realized I never left. Simple city altruism I believe. It happens to people in every city I know...the simple inquiry pulls at you as you say to yourself:"why would I want to leave? everything is around me."

False.

This go-round, I got out of the city and traveled to Yokohama, which is understood to be Japan's L.A. to NYC (Tokyo). I noticed definite changes in the pace, fashion, and amount of space....a rarity in the prefectures of Tokyo But most importantly, I got to breathe in some fresh air. And for once, I let my guard down and played tourist.

Coma-Chi and I traveled to Kamakura. A beachtown known also for it's many temples, spooky bamboo forrest, and legendary Diabatsu: the giant Buddha. We visited as much as we could that day before becoming totally wiped out. It was dope to see the real Japan, outside of the hypercity of Tokyo. There were all sorts of treasures.

oddly enough the kanji reads: "komachi street"

Madd flavors of Senbei....fresh rice cakes.

Dango: Japanese sweet rice dumpling. No clue what to compare it to but it's good.Madd Flavors of soybeans...think: chocolate, green tea, candy-coated.

Tai-yaki...fried fish filled w. red bean paste. Think: waffle + jam.

Teeny tiny boiled fish.
big pigs.

Small treasures.

homies 4 life. hi-fi style.

a billion lilypads.

Dope temple. Rough name.
Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū

Madd school kids and sake. What a mix.

My fortune: I generally have good luck and will be successful at business, but will suffer an accident if I am not aware of my surroundings.

Old-world Japanese house we found looking for the bamboo forest.

The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a monumental outdoor bronze statuueof Amitābha Buddha in the Kōtoku-in Temple in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

It is believed that the statue was originally cast in 1252, following an idea by the priest Joko, who also collected donations to build it. The sculptors were One-Goroemon and Tanji-Hisatomo.
